Centene Community Ice Center Selected as Host for 2024 NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Regional
St. Louis Sports Commission, City of Maryland Heights, St. Louis Legacy Ice Foundation, and Spectra will welcome thousands to the region
Maryland Heights, MO (October 16, 2020)—Centene Community Ice Center, which is operated by professional venue management company Spectra, will host the 2024 NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Regional, the NCAA announced Wednesday along with hundreds of other championship sites.
In its winning bid, the collaboration between the St. Louis Sports Commission, Lindenwood University, St. Louis Blues, and Spectra demonstrated the venue’s and the region’s ability to create an outstanding experience for thousands of student-athletes, coaches, fans, media and officials. The group also guaranteed NCAA sport-specific bid specifications, such as providing optimal facilities, ease of travel to the location, and ample lodging.
The announcement was part of 450 host site selections for preliminary rounds and final sites of NCAA championships in Divisions I, II and III held from 2022-23 through 2025-26.
“We are so excited to welcome the 2024 NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Regional to St. Louis. The new Centene Community Ice Center will provide an incredible atmosphere for the teams and fans in a perfect hockey setting,” Chris Roseman, Vice President of the St. Louis Sports Commission, said. “We look forward to working with Lindenwood University, the St. Louis Blues, and Spectra to welcome everyone to the Heartland of Hockey.”
The state-of-the-art facility, whose opening in September 2019 marked the conclusion of the $83 million project, features four NHL sized ice sheets, including a covered outdoor rink designed as a multi-purpose venue for concerts, festivals and other events.
Patrick Quinn, Chairman of St. Louis Legacy Ice Foundation, said: “This is exactly the type of major event that we envisioned hosting when designing the Centene Community Ice Center — a place where NCAA athletes would have an energetic, yet intimate fan experience and where they can feed off of the adrenaline of the crowd despite not being in their home arenas.”
Welcoming the NCAA Regional’s will create a boom to the tourism and hospitality industry. With more than 3,800 hundred hotel rooms, Maryland Heights will become a destination for visitors.
“Hosting the 2024 NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Regionals is a tremendous opportunity for the Centene Community Ice Center and the City of Maryland Heights,” Maryland Heights Mayor Mike Moeller said. “These games will generate much enthusiasm for hockey in St. Louis, further growing the game and attracting more children and adults to ice sports. Additionally, Regionals will bring many visitors to Maryland Heights, which will help boost our economy and support our hospitality industry.”
Lance Rosenberg, Spectra’s General Manager at Centene Community Ice Center, added: "The Centene Community Ice Center is thrilled to have been selected by the NCAA as host venue for the 2024 Men's Ice Hockey Regionals. Not only does this event showcase the venue's ability to host marquee events, it also allows for all the ancillary festivities that take place around an NCAA tournament to conveniently be under one roof. Most importantly, it will bring economic and tourism gain to the city of Maryland Heights."
In addition to St. Louis, three other cities were also selected as Regional sites in 2024: Springfield, Mass; Providence, R.I.; and Sioux Falls, S.D.
Centene is the practice facility to the St. Louis Blues and home to the Lindenwood University Hockey Program, St. Louis AAA Blues Hockey, St. Louis Lady Cyclones, Total Package Hockey St. Louis, and the St. Louis Blues Alumni Association.
